Æon's Secrets of Jedi Outcast FAQ
INTRO
This FAQ - actually a list of Secrets - is for the folks that played the long since released Star Wars Jedi Knight - Jedi Outcast (developed by Raven) or those who just got the game from the bargain bin, and are now wondering where all those secrets are actually hidden.
To make life easier I am providing screenshots to let you quickly find the hidden areas in the game. These are listed in the order of appearance in the game.
Tip: If you only want to find out how many secrets there are per Map (avoiding spoilers), take a closer look at the Table of Contents, where you will find Secret, Special Area, Supply Key & Crate counters.
Feedback: Should you find something of interest I have overlooked, please see the Feedback section of this FAQ.
Tip: I strongly suggest that you play Jedi Outcast at least once, and then maybe a second time specifically to find secrets, before you look through this FAQ!
Warning: Just looking at the many thumbnails could give away secrets you might want to find without help. Spoilers ahead!
May the Shadow Secrets be with you!

GENERAL GAMEPLAY & TIPS
Why actually bother to find Secrets?
Well the sort answer, at least for me is: "Because it is fun".
Not only is the player usually short on ammo, shields, or health, but many of the secrets are actually very creative and fun. So when you ignore them you are missing out on an important part of the game.
Alas in Jedi Outcast the secrets only yield additional ammo, or shield packs, rarely a seeker drone or a portable assault sentry.
How to better find Secrets?
Before peeking at the below list of Secrets and Special Areas, you might like to try your hand at finding them yourself. Here are a few things that help in Jedi Outcast:
-
Always follow all Paths. Jedi Outcast is less linear, than e.g. Jedi Academy, so be sure to inspect every room and alternate path. Finding secrets is all about exploring.
-
Again differing from Jedi Academy, there is no simple way to find the secrets, a Force Sense does not exist in this game.
-
Be sure to explore areas higher up, e.g. on pipes or on ledges. Some tricky jumping with Force Jump may be required.
-
Investigate any of the destroyable grates, these usually hide secrets.
-
Look into dark areas using your night vision.
-
Always investigate the walls of elevators for secrets doors or look under elevator platforms.
-
Generally pay attention to your surroundings. Often batches of items will be visible from far off, it is then up to you to figure out how to get there.
-
Jedi Outcast counts the number of secrets at the end of each mission. So you can double check if you missed any.
Does Cheating help to find Secrets?
Yes it does. It can also save a lot of time, when trying to reach the more awkward and difficult to access areas in the game. To be able to cheat you will need to open the in-game console via Shift + ~ (US/UK) or Shift + ^ (DE) key combination, and type:
helpusobi 1
This lets you use all the cheat commands on in the console:
-
Force Jump: One of the more useful commands to locate let you get up there more easily. Alas it does not seem to be possible to boost its level individually. But you can upgrade all your force powers via:
setForceAll 3
Level 3 is the highest level, to lower it set it, to 1 or 2.
-
Flymode: Bind a convenient key, like the v-key, to the command noclip:
bind v "noclip"
This flymode lets you fly though walls. Thus e.g. "hidden" rooms can be found. Press the key again to turn off the flymode, but stay "inside" the map when you do so.
-
God Mode: When you type god (press enter) on the console, you turn invincible, thus exploring the game is a lot less of a hassle. Bind this to the e.g. g-key for convenience:
bind g "god"
Type god again to become mortal again.
-
AI ignores you: Type notarget (press enter) to make the AI (the NPCs in the game) ignore you. You can now walk past them, and watch them in their idle animations. Bind this to the e.g. n-key for convenience:
bind n "notarget"
How to manually Load Maps?
Throughout this FAQ I will mention the exact Map names (next to the thumbnails), where the Secrets and Specials are located. To load up the appropriate map directly, open the in-game console and type:
map <mapname>
Replace the placeholder <mapname> with one of the these valid map names: artus_detention, artus_mine, artus_topside, bespin_platform, bespin_streets, bespin_undercity, cairn_assembly, cairn_bay, cairn_dock1, cairn_reactor, doom_comm, doom_detention, doom_shields, kejim_base, kejim_post, ns_hideout, ns_starpad, ns_streets, pit, valley, yavin_canyon, yavin_courtyard, yavin_final, yavin_swamp, yavin_temple, yavin_trial.
E.g. type map pit (press enter) to load a "secret" test map.
Also see the Does Cheating help to find Secrets? Q&A on this.
How to play at non-standard Resolutions?
Per se the Quake 3 engine used by Jedi Outcast only lets you choose from a specific set of resolutions, like 1280x1024 or 1024x768 pixels, using the r_mode command. But what to do if you want to play the game full screen at a e.g. 1680x1050 pixel resolution? Luckily there are a few commands that let you revert to the default desktop resolution:
// Quake 3 settings to turn on 1680x1050x60!
// AR = Aspect Ratio, FPS = Frames Per Second
// CR = Custom Resolution
seta com_maxfps "0" // NO limit to FPS.
seta r_swapInterval "0" // Turn off V-Sync.
seta r_mode "-1" // Allow custom AR.
seta r_customaspect "1" // Define AR 0/1.
seta r_customwidth "1680" // x - CR
seta r_customheight "1050" // y - CR
Enter these lines either manually on the in-game console or create a (text) file called Jedi Outcast\GameData\Base\autoexec.cfg and copy paste the above lines into it. Jedi Outcast should then load these settings on startup. If not, open the in-game console and type exec autoexec to run the configuration file.
How to create clean, HUD-free Screenshots?
Again, per se the Quake 3 engine supports commands to turn off the weapon model and also the HUD (Heads-up Display). But alas Raven changed this for Jedi Outcast, making it a bit more complicated to take clean screenshots:
// Use Levelshot to turn OFF the HUD!
bind . "levelshot"
// Turn on HUD, via quick save & quick load!
bind m "save quick;load quick;"
// Take screenshot, without console texts!
bind , "cl_noprint 1;screenshot;cl_noprint 0"
A side-effect of the levelshot command is the removal of the HUD. This tells the engine to create a 256x256 pixel TGA level shot in the Jedi Outcast\GameData\Base\levelshots\ folder. These are pretty much useless, because of the low resolution and the fact that each level shot overwrites the previous one (as long as you stay in the same map). But it *does* turn off the HUD.
Using the above conveniently bound keys, you would press the .-key (period) to turn off the HUD, then press ,-key (comma) to take screenshots. Finally, when you want to see the HUD again press the m-key.
Note: The only way to turn on the HUD again is to quick save the game and then quick load it again. This is ugly, but fast enough not to really disturb the gameplay.
Tip: If you prefer not to see Kyle in your screenshots, switch to your lightsaber, then deactivate the beam, and then via key-combination (you can set it via the menus) turn *off* third person view.
SECRETS & SPECIAL AREAS
Here you will find the Secrets and Special Areas listed in order of "appearance" in Jedi Outcast.
Note: Quite often the items (loot) in secret areas are not explicitly mentioned, because they are trivial, usually either ammo or shield packs.
